International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual global campaign, marked on 8th March, which celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. This Grand Rounds presentation was originally given as The Ruth Sanger Oration at the Blood conference in 2022. The Ruth Sanger Medal is awarded annually by the Australian and New Zealand Society of blood transfusion to someone who has made a significant contribution to the field of transfusion medicine. It is made in memory of the extraordinary contributions of Ruth Sanger, an Australian scientist and blood group serologist whose meticulous work led to significant increases in our knowledge of blood groups, blood-group antibodies, and the genetics of blood groups.
Is it possible, and is it ethical to resource-adapt cancer treatment developed in high income countries for the benefit of children with cancer living in low- and middle-income settings?
This is the dilemma, and the challenge, faced by health care professionals in such countries who care for 80% of the world’s children who have cancer, and where the chance of cure often remains poor. Adapting cancer treatment is a key pillar of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer to improve the cure rates for children with cancer to 60% by 2030.
The Melbourne Children’s Campus has a strong history of academic surgical excellence. As we make strides towards enhancing surgical collaborations, we aim to create a Surgical Research Program that will encourage and support all interested surgeons and surgical trainees.
This Grand Round will consider how human-centered design, applied to the health system and informed by a health-literacy framework, may help advance health equity. We will review evidence that includes inter-disciplinary scholarship (e.g., behavioral science, computer science, clinical epidemiology) in the areas of obesity prevention, promoting school readiness, chronic-illness management and the care of children with special health care needs.
Wheezing in childhood is extremely common, nearly 50% of children experience at least one episode of wheezing before the age of 6 years and wheeze is one of the commonest health problems requiring medical care. Children aged between 1-5 years account for 75% of these admissions with the median age of admission for acute attacks of wheeze being 3 years.
Adolescent use of violence in the home (AVITH) refers to violence, or abusive or intimidating behaviours by a young person against their parent, carer, sibling or other family member within the home. The Victorian Family Violence Reform recognises violence used by young people as a distinct form of family violence, requiring unique responses to the inherent complexities of this form of family violence. The opportunity to play is a fundamental interest of children and play is also recognised as a child’s right (article 31 of the Convention on Rights of the Child). Play is necessary for a child’s development, their healing and to mediate their experience of medical care and procedures.

The term ‘learning health systems’ is not new. But widespread consensus that learning is crucial for health system performance is not matched by shared understanding of how health systems learn. The speaker will present ideas for such shared understanding based on a recent report by the WHO’s Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research.
