On Sunday, Associate Professor Andrew Kornberg took-off in front of a crowd of thousands from the Australian International Airshow to begin his fundraising adventure like no one — Fly for the Kids.
Fly for the Kids will see Andrew circumnavigate Australia, flying solo throughout March, raising funds for the 2017 Good Friday Appeal. This incredible journey will take Andrew 27 days. He will stop in 38 locations and spend more than 64 hours in the air.
At the Airshow, Andrew took the opportunity to meet with RCH families and aviation enthusiasts alike. Not only did he receive incredible support from the RCH community, but attendees at the Airshow were keen to meet him and hear more about his incredible journey.
7 News Melbourne and the Herald Sun were also at the Airshow to cover Andrew’s take-off. You can watch the 7 News story on Facebook and read the Herald Sun story online.
On Sunday evening, Andrew made his first major stop in Adelaide to meet with one of his patients, Archer. Born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, Archer and his family travel from Adelaide every few months to see Andrew at the RCH.
Archer’s mum Vikki said: “Andrew’s an amazing man and he’s doing an amazing thing with Fly for the Kids. We are forever grateful to him for his time, his care and his commitment to helping kids like Archer. He blows us away and we hope that Fly for the Kids is a big success.”
Fly for the Kids fundraising will support RCH patients with Complex Movement Disorders. These life-limitin and progressive disorders cause uncontrollable violent movements, twisting postures and or spasms that profoundly impact on the quality of life for both the children and their families who care for them.
