A new range of activity guides for children with disability, autism or other additional needs has been designed by the Raising Children Network to reach parents wherever they are, whenever they need them.
If you work with children with diverse abilities, these resources could be used to connect with children and help them express their feelings, as well as provide ideas their parents or carers can try at home.
The activity guides can be used at any time, but can also be downloaded in printable form to support children in times of trauma such as in bushfire or flood refuge centres.
Play specialist Cat Sewell partnered with Raising Children Network to create nine new guides filled with ideas for parents and carers on activities that can help with wellbeing, connection and learning.
There are instructions for creating a funny, folded drawing, using humour to help children relieve stress. It is particularly good for children with limited verbal communication skills.
The other new activity guides for children with disability, autism or other additional needs are:
- Parachute play
- Belly breathing
- Paper planes
- Sock balls
- Shake it out
- Make a safe space
- Move with the room
- Move the walls
