The high cost of sleep problems

SleepAt least one in three children under the age of seven years has trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep through the night, costing the government $27.5 million each year in health services.

New research published in the British Medical Journal has found that 20 per cent of children had trouble falling asleep at night, and 15 per cent had problems staying asleep.

Sleep problems in children impact children’s quality of life and are associated with problems in behaviour, social and emotional functioning, concentration and learning, as well as parent mental health issues.
