Youth2030: The United Nations Strategy on Youth

Young people make up 1.8 billion of the world’s population as of 2018. With this current figure expected to reach 2 billion by 2030,  The United Nations held their 73rd session of the UN General Assembly on the 24th September to discuss what young people of today want; a sustainable and peaceful world that recognises their rights for empowerment, personal development, education and training for employment.

This has led to the launch of a new initiative entitled the ‘Youth2030: The United Nations Youth Strategy’ with the intention to:

    • Advance the rights of young people in all their diversity around the world
    • Engage and benefit from the insights of young people
    • Ensure youth participation in the strategy and its implementation and review in 2030

The session also introduced the global partnership – Generation Unlimited, another part to the strategy which aims to ensure that every young person is education, training or employed by 2030. Generation Unlimited hopes to address the concern that youth aged 12 – 14 lack basic reading and math skills as well as the decline of young women in the workforce and access adequate support for them.
