CHILDREN, TRAUMA AND RECOVERY

The first Alumni lunch meeting in 2019 was held on March 5th.

The speaker was Ruth Wraith OAM

An audience of around 35 alumni members and guests enjoyed an excellent talk about the issues of Post Traumatic Stress in children after major traumatic events in their lives. Ruth Wraith has been involved in counselling children and families after a number of major tragedies including Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday, Queen Street and Port Arthur massacres.

She was introduced by the President Dr Hugo Gold and illustrated her talk with paintings and drawings made by affected children using the examples of a girl who had witnessed her sister being struck and killed by a car, two siblings whose parents were both shot in front of them, a child who survived a major fire which destroyed the family home and other traumatised children.

She was thanked at the close of the talk by Christine Unsworth.
