The RCH Alumni note with much regret the recent death of Dr Ian McDonald. Ian was born on July 28th 1923 and was in his 96^thyear when he died peacefully on Feb 5th.

He will be remembered by many of the Alumni as a pioneering anaesthetist who served on the senior staff of The Royal Children’s Hospital for nearly thirty years from the early 1960s until retirement in 1988. He graduated from Melbourne Medical School in 1947 and after some early paediatric training embarked on training in anaesthesia spending time in Oxford at the Radcliffe Infirmary and with “the world’s premier paediatric anaesthetist” – Jackson Rees, in Liverpool.

Both Ian and his brother Colin were notable cricketers (Colin played for Australia and was an opening batsman in the fifties). Ian played as wicket keeper for Victoria over many years and for an Australian XI against South Africa in 1953.

We extend our sympathy to his children Sue, Jan and Andrew and to other family members. His wife Dorothy (Dottie) of 64 years, a theatre sister at the Children’s Hospital (then in Carlton), predeceased him in 2014.
