Get to know the team protecting you against flu: Meet Annie

Our Immunisation Centre team has done a great job over the past couple of months vaccinating staff, patients and families in a bid to keep our hospital flu free, but how much do we actually know about the team working tirelessly behind the scenes?

Over the next couple of weeks we will be speaking to different members of the team to find out a little bit more about them and their work at the RCH.

This week we chat to Immunisation Pharmacist, Annie.

How long have you been at the RCH and what do you enjoy most about your role?

I have been at the RCH for almost four years and within the Immunisation team for two years. I love working in a dynamic and ambitious team who all work together to provide great care for our patients. We provide immunisation advice and education to clinicians and families within the RCH as well as the broader community and this is very rewarding.

What made you want to become a pharmacist?

I was always interested in working in healthcare and pharmacy appealed to me as medications are used so often and for such a variety of reasons. I like the role that pharmacists play in the multidisciplinary team, working with nursing and medical staff to ensure safe and effective use of medicines.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I enjoy playing netball, particularly in the local football and netball league in my hometown Shepparton. I also enjoy taking my new puppy, Flo (who is a groodle) to the park. I support the Melbourne Demons in the AFL, but sometimes I’m not sure if that’s enjoyable!

What is the craziest flu myth you’ve heard?

I got the flu from the flu vaccine!

What is something you think you’ll take away from this year?

The pandemic has forced us to be flexible in the way we deliver our care. Whether this is through Telehealth appointments, giving flu vaccines in homes or posting medications to families, there are many ways we can still deliver our great care without patients having to come into the hospital. I’ve also been reminded how powerful it can be to simply be kind to one another and have a positive attitude.
