Veronica saved by new liver

Seven-month-old Royal Children’s Hospital patient Veronica Bazouni had not long to live when she was saved by a liver transplant.

“She’s very lucky to be alive,” Royal Children’s Hospital liver transplant program head Associate Prof Winita Hardikar said.

When a donor liver became available, the Essendon infant was in end-stage liver failure.

Mum Carol Bazouni said two days after her birth, Veronica had begun to turn yellow.

A biopsy found her liver to be extremely scarred and with very few functioning liver cells.

“She was getting sicker every day until the last minute when she stopped feeding – and that night they found the liver,” Mrs Bazouni said.

Veronica is now doing well. “She’s a strong baby … she’s eating, playing, laughing, a normal kid now – it’s amazing,”
