The Royal Children’s Hospital Children’s Bioethics Centre has recently appointed the first Bioethics Clinical Nurse Consultant, Dr Jenny O’Neill. In this Grand Round, we introduce Jenny, and explore the role of the nurse ethicist and the value they can bring to a healthcare service. We will highlight the unique perspective that a nursing background brings to ethical deliberation and clinical ethics consultation.
In recognition of Allied Health Professions Day on 14 October 2021, RCH is excited to extend the celebrations across the entire week of 11-15th October. Allied Health Professions Day first began in the UK in 2018 and has since become an international event to recognise and celebrate the Allied Health Professional community.
Outcomes following the intensive care management of critically ill children have improved dramatically over the past few decades. Advances in the provision of intensive care has led to increased rates of survival, but for some children who experience critical illness there are lasting consequences.
Pain is described as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage”. This definition from IASP guides clinicians to potential prevention and intervention points for a reduction in the experience of pain for our patients.
A Stepped Care Approach to Developmental Care is a Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation funded project which aims to ensure that children referred with a developmental concern are seen by the right person in the right place at the right time. To achieve this a new Allied Health centralised intake team apply a stepped approach that identifies the child’s needs and pathway.
