Hopkins Symposium: Childhood Dementia: Empowering unified efforts to address unmet needs

Childhood dementia is a collective term for over 100 neurodegenerative disorders that begin in childhood or adolescence, each marked by progressive cognitive decline. Most are rare or ultra-rare monogenic disorders with a combined birth frequency estimated at greater than 1 in 2,900 births. Despite their significant impact, fewer than 5% of these conditions have effective treatments and Australian health systems face significant challenges in meeting the complex and critical needs of affected patients and their families.

The science of change enhancing evidence-based practice through Implementation Science

Significant time, effort and resources are spent developing rigorous evidence-based health care guidelines. Unfortunately, not enough of these endeavours result in patient benefit. Implementation science, the study of methods to promote the systematic, widespread uptake of research findings and evidence-based practices into routine care to improve health outcomes, offers an approach to optimise the uptake of evidence-based practice.

Taking a lifelong perspective on Cerebral Palsy: Challenges and opportunities

Emma Livingstone, CEO of UP – The Adult Cerebral Palsy Movement, will share insights from her lived experience and advocacy work on the evolving care and understanding of cerebral palsy (CP) across the lifespan. Her presentation will explore recent research advancements, the lifelong nature of CP, and the importance of addressing co-morbidities. She will also discuss how child practitioners can better equip children with CP for adulthood.

Allied Health: Building capacity and changing lives

Allied Health Professions Day is recognised internationally on the 14th October. To celebrate, this Grand Round will showcase the great work of our RCH Allied health teams. The Executive Director of Ambulatory Services and Chief Allied Health Officer Doug McCaskie will commence proceedings, followed by a panel of Allied health clinicians who will showcase how their current work builds capacity and changes the lives of our patients, their families and the community.

Reshaping Mental Health Resources: A Collaborative Approach

Join us for a panel discussion to explore how integrating the voices of children and their parents can transform the work we do in mental health. We will share our projects and insights, emphasising the impact of lived experience on the supports and resources we create. We will discuss practical insights for supporting lived experience in research, knowledge translation and clinical practice and challenge current assumptions to reshape mental health resources and how they are created.

Exploring the role of rehabilitation services in the management of Functional Neurological Disorders

The approach and attitude towards Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) has changed over the last decade and anecdotally at least, we seem to be seeing more cases in our day-to-day practice.  Patients with functional symptoms present to many disciplines and functional symptoms can co-exist with organic pathology. There is now evidence to show earlier diagnosis and treatment can lead to more positive outcomes.

In recognition of Allied Health Professions Day 2023, this year’s RCH Allied Health Grand Round explores future opportunities for Allied Health to harness and build upon digital learning and capability in the delivery of high-quality patient care. This year’s NAIDOC Week Theme, ‘For Our Elders’ celebrates the valuable contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders in all areas of Australia. Please join Melbourne Children’s Campus leaders in Aboriginal and Torres Islander healthcare in a panel discussion about the crucial role that Elders play in our services, programs, care and research. The panel aims to acknowledge and celebrate the often hidden guidance, influence and advocacy of Elders in health.

Medicines for ADHD: They work, but are they safe?

Meta-analyses show that medication is an effective treatment pathway in children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. These medications are also commonly associated with a number of side effects and risk factors for other conditions, which are less well understood by practitioners. This Grand Round intends to balance understanding of the efficacy of ADHD medication with the potential risks, and provide evidence for the safety of ADHD medication prescription in clinical practice.
