Synopsis

This Grand Round will describe current research and clinical advances in the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management. The springboard for the Grand Round is acknowledging background work done by Dr Rob Eyres, who recently retired after a 40 year association with RCH. Rob was a senior staff specialist in anaesthesia, and had terms as both Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management and Director of the Division of Specialist Services. Rob’s contributions included important roles in PICU, development of aspects of paediatric medical perfusion and cardiopulmonary bypass as well as his core engagement with Anaesthesia and Pain Management, with a particular research focus on local anaesthetic agents and their use in children.

Sir Isaac Newton suggested that “If I can see further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”. The recent Campus review concluded that the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management was one of the world’s leading research departments in paediatric anaesthesia. This Grand Round will take up these themes, as we acknowledge advances that have their origins in a giant of Paediatric Anaesthesia.
