Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs) – The Anaesthetic Department’s Perpective

Synopsis: Over the last three years there has been a dramatic change in the vascular access services that the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management has been able to provide. Not only is there an increase in activity; but also the range of devices, the pre and post insertion assessment,  and the “conectivity” we now have with other departments around Australasia is continuing to expand.

This presentation will take a tour of what we are doing and can provide, how good our performance is, and offer some insights of possible directions in the future. The nature of vascular access in paediatric hospitals is topical around the world currently, and Dr Ian Smith believes a collaborative approach between the various craft groups will lead to optimum outcomes for the children at RCH.

Speaker:
Dr Ian Smith is an anaesthetist at RCH with an interest in vascular access and cardiac anaesthesia.

Along with Dr Elizabeth Prentice and Dr William Browne we coordinate the vascular access services within the department.
