The Surgical Program: Rise of the Academic Surgeons at the Children’s Campus

Synopsis:

The Melbourne Children’s Campus has a strong history of academic surgical excellence. As we make strides towards enhancing surgical collaborations, we aim to create a Surgical Research Program that will encourage and support all interested surgeons and surgical trainees. This work has been supported by the MCRI, in particular, Professors Kathryn North and Vicki Anderson, and the University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, and represents an exciting opportunity for surgical research on Campus.

Speaker:

Professor Sebastian King established and leads the Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction Service at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Following his PhD at the University of Melbourne, which focused upon the motility patterns of children affected by slow transit constipation, Sebastian completed his paediatric surgical training at The Royal Children’s Hospital. He then underwent fellowship surgical training at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada.

Sebastian’s clinical role is focused upon children born with anorectal malformations or Hirschsprung disease, and those affected by chronic constipation. His ongoing research is supported by The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Medical Research Future Fund and the Federal Government.
