Synopsis
The Royal Children’s Hospital Children’s Bioethics Centre has recently appointed the first Bioethics Clinical Nurse Consultant, Dr Jenny O’Neill. In this Grand Round, we introduce Jenny, and explore the role of the nurse ethicist and the value they can bring to a healthcare service. We will highlight the unique perspective that a nursing background brings to ethical deliberation and clinical ethics consultation. Dr. Georgina Morley, a Nurse Ethicist from the United States has been invited to present. Dr Morley will reflect on the ways that her identity and experiences as a nurse has informed her current role in ethics, and the broad aims of her research and program building.

Dr Georgina Morley, PhD is Assistant Staff, Nurse Ethicist within the Center for Bioethics and Director of the Nursing Ethics Program, an innovative collaborative program between the Center for Bioethics and the Nursing Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA. Dr Morley received a BA in Philosophy from King’s College London and went on to train as a nurse, receiving a Post Graduate Diploma in Adult Nursing in 2012 and a Masters of Science in Nursing in 2014. Georgina has a PhD from University of Bristol exploring moral distress as experienced by critical care nurses in the United Kingdom which was funded by a prestigious Welcome Trust Society and Ethics Fellowship for Healthcare Professionals. Dr Morley is an international expert on moral distress, has been invited to speak on the topic in both the UK and US, and has published peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on the topic.
