Congratulations Prof Sawyer

The Centre for Adolescent Health is pleased to offer the warmest of congratulations to Professor Susan Sawyer on her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant service to tertiary education, adolescent health and international groups.

The Order of Australia is the pre-eminent means by which Australia recognises the outstanding and meritorious service of its citizens.

Professor Susan Sawyer holds the Geoff and Helen Handbury Chair of Adolescent Health at the University of Melbourne and is Director of the Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital, a World Health Organization collaborating centre. A paediatrician by training, she has advanced the field of adolescent health in Australia and beyond. Her clinical and research interests primarily relate to quality health care for adolescents, including mental health care. She was a Commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing which has proven highly influential in building an understanding of the ‘triple dividend’ that comes from investing in adolescents. She is currently President of the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH).

“I am delighted to congratulate Susan Sawyer on her AM in today’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. Over the course of the past 25 years she has led the development of clinical services for adolescents, trained a generation of paediatricians in adolescent health and medicine and created the infrastructure for specialist accreditation in adolescent and young adult medicine. She has made a particular contribution to the development of young women wishing to enter the field of adolescent health in both Australia and internationally. Increasingly active on the international stage, she has been an outstanding leader of the International Association for Adolescent Health. This recognition of her achievements is very well-deserved.” Professor George Patton

Congratulations again to Professor Sawyer AM and to all Australians honoured in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
