Wheelchair swing means fun for all kids

Jasmin enjoys the swing with Natalie and James from Rogue Traders

Patients who are wheelchair-bound or with restricted mobility can now enjoy the hospital playground with the launch of a wheelchair swing at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Donated and installed by Variety the children’s charity and FirmWare Technologies, the Liberty Swing is in the Children’s Garden at the rear of the hospital, and accommodates children in wheelchairs and those who have difficulty manoeuvring conventional swings.

Variety ambassador, actor and lead singer of Rogue Traders, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, joined hospital patients and staff to help the first of our swingers climb aboard the swing on Tuesday 2 October.

Bradley Sewart and Jasmin Fish both aged 10, were  the first to try out the new swing.  They both visit the hospital regularly and are unable to use the conventional swings.

Swing creator Wayne Devine has been working on the project since 1988, when he noticed some children with disabilities were unable to use swings usually found in playgrounds.

He spent many years developing and testing his design; the first swing was installed in a Sydney playground in mid-2000 and they are now in parks and playgrounds throughout Australia.

The swing has an internal steel structure surrounded by heavy-duty plastic and can support up to 250kgs.  It has a ramp under the swing and moveable seat that can incorporate a wheelchair.

Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing.
