Brave Minni Anstee has just clocked up 600 days in The Royal Children’s Hospital.
At two years of age Minni is the second-smallest patient in the world to receive a radical blood boosting treatment. Her parents hope that this treatment will allow Minni to soon return home.
Minni was diagnosed with severe immunodeficiency and has been living in a special isolation ward since she was three months old. Being born with no immune system, the “girl in the bubble” has not slept a night outside the hospital since her diagnosis.
“Because she’s been in here for so long it’s normal to her. She copes with all the needles and medication,” say parents Sam and Danielle, adding that in spite of everything “she’s still a very content kid”.
When Minni was six months old she received stem cell treatment injections to develop a new immune system. But five months later, she suffered transplant complications.
Minni’s parents have gained new hope since she has been receiving a new treatment in which her blood is filtered with ultra-violet light to stimulate the immune system. “Her lungs have improved and her skin is much better. We’re hopeful,” says Sam.
