A new start for Jibby

This week three-year old Jibreel left The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) for the first time since being flown down from Brisbane with end-stage severe heart failure.

Jibby was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called cardiomyopathy after his parents tragically lost his older brother to a similar condition.

In the early stages Jibby underwent implantation of the Berlin artificial heart, to maintain his condition until a donor heart became available. Jibby called the Berlin heart his ‘robo heart’. His mum, Jas, said it was a special moment when he woke up after the transplant. “I said there’s no robo heart and his eyes were just wide open”, she said.

RCH cardiac surgeon A/Prof Yves D’Udekem said although heart transplant is not a cure, Jibby is “out of the woods now and should be good for a long long time”.
