Meet Shefani, one of the JRMOs (Junior Registered Medical Officers) that have just joined The Royal Children’s Hospital.
What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare, specifically paediatrics?
I initially completed an undergraduate degree in biomedical science, which I enjoyed, but I realised I preferred the practical aspects of healthcare over research. My interest in biology during school and my love for working with and advocating for children naturally led me towards paediatrics.
How has your journey so far influenced your interest in health inequities and your approach to care?
My background is Sri Lankan, I came here with my parents when I was two. We go back there quite often to visit my grandparents, and since I was very little, I’ve always been very curious about health inequities, specifically relating to children, asking my parents, why is it like this? Why is care different based on where you live?
Even in Victoria, you see differences in access to care. I’m interested in studying health economics and the distribution of resources across the network in the future, to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, have access to quality healthcare.
Describe your journey to the RCH and what drew you here.
The RCH has always been my goal, owing to its reputation as a leading paediatric hospital. After completing my medical training, I did my internship at the Northern Hospital to gain general registration.
I was lucky enough to do a paediatric rotation there; the team had such a good culture and were so supportive and keen to share their knowledge. I really enjoyed that rotation; it was the most fun I’d had during all my training, and I decided to formally start training in paediatrics.
What are you most looking forward to doing here?
I’m particularly excited about my upcoming rotations in neonatal intensive care and emergency medicine. I enjoyed my previous experience in a special care nursery and paediatric emergency, and I’m eager to see how the RCH provides care in these areas.
The child-friendly environment at the RCH, with its emphasis on making children and their families feel comfortable, is something I deeply appreciate. I’m also looking forward to meeting and working with my cohort of JRMOs, as I’ve heard great things about the supportive community here.
