Preserving function in children with spinal cord injury: Advances in acute and rehabilitation care

Synopsis

Although traumatic spinal cord injury in children is uncommon, effects are lifelong, and almost all aspects of daily function are affected. Recent advances in trauma management, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation interventions aim to preserve spinal function and optimise long term outcomes. During this Grand Round, a range of speakers will present on the latest advances in spinal trauma management and rehabilitation. The Victorian Spinal Service will also update the newly developed transition pathway and the latest research in spinal cord injury.

Speakers

Mr Warwick Teague is a Paediatric Surgeon with a specialist interest in Trauma and Director of Trauma Services, RCH

Mr Michael B Johnson is a Paediatric Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon and Head of Department, Orthopaedics, RCH. Michael’s sub speciality interest is in the management of spinal conditions including trauma and Scoliosis. He will focus on the surgical management of skeletal injuries in the context of spinal cord injury.

A/Prof Adam Scheinberg is the Statewide Medical Director of the VPRS and a paediatric rehabilitation specialist.

Ms Abby Thevarajah and Ms Joannah Butchart are Senior Physiotherapists, Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service RCH.

Ms Catherine Papaioannou is a final year medical student at University of Melbourne.

Ms Erin Garner is Senior Occupational Therapist and Manager of the Spinal Outreach Service, Austin Health.

Dr Andrew Nunn is Director of the Statewide Spinal Service based at Austin Health.
