The ‘Center’ Concept: Is a multi-disciplinary approach the future of medicine? (Lessons learned from the care of complex paediatric colorectal problems)

Synopsis

Dr Marc Levitt has spent the last 20 years educating surgeons, physicians, nurses and families about the complexities of congenital colorectal conditions. A large part of his time has been spent travelling nationally and internationally to teach operative techniques and management strategies for these complex children.

Marc was instrumental in the creation of the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, in 2014. The guiding principal for the center has been to bring together, in a collaborative approach, the many specialties that care for patients with congenital colorectal conditions. In doing so, he has enabled the patients and families to be assessed by paediatric surgeons, urologists, gynaecologists, and gastroenterologists in a single visit to the center.

Marc will discuss the lessons he has learnt from his last two decades of educating around the world.

Speaker

Dr Marc Levitt is the world’s leading expert on paediatric colorectal surgical conditions, following his 25-year collaboration with Dr Alberto Pena. He is the inaugural Surgical Director of the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction (CCPR) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Ohio State University. The CCPR aligns specialists within GI, Colorectal, Paediatric Surgery, Urology and Gynaecology to create a comprehensive treatment program assisting children with these complex disorders. He also serves as the program director for the paediatric colorectal surgery fellowship.
