SYNOPSIS
Whilst it is often assumed that there is little in the way of evidence to guide practice in child psychiatry the truth is somewhat more complex. Our evidence base has in fact developed considerably over the last 20 years and whilst there are still many gaps in our understanding it is now possible to practice evidence based healthcare for many developmental mental health problems that affect both children and adolescents. Unfortunately it is still taking much too long to get this evidence routinely implemented into day to day practice. This grand round will review the field, focus on several examples of good practice and think about the potential role that RCH can play in moving things forward.
SPEAKERS
Professor David Coghill recently joined RCH and the University of Melbourne as the Financial Markets Foundation Chair of Developmental Mental Health. After training in London and Edinburgh he worked until recently in Scotland as a child psychiatrist first in Fife and then for the last 17 years at the University of Dundee where he was the Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He has maintained a strong clinical involvement and has a particular interest in moving evidence into practice.
