Down syndrome: What the paediatrician needs to know

Synopsis

Health care recommendations for children with Down syndrome have undergone several significant changes in recent years and it is important for providers to be aware of the current guidelines.  Patient examples illustrating some of the critical issues will be used in the presentation and time for general questions will be provided. Tools and resources for the provider will be discussed.  This presentation will be valuable for health care professionals who strive to keep children with Down syndrome healthy and happy. It will help providers understand unique aspects of health supervision and guidance for individuals with Down syndrome.

Dr Marilyn J. Bull is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and continued her education with a pediatric residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital of Chicago and a clinical fellowship in Birth Defects and Genetic Counseling at Boston Floating Hospital. She has served on the faculty at the Indiana University Medical Center since 1976 where she currently is the Morris Green Professor of Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Dr Bull served as the director of the section of Developmental Pediatrics at Riley Hospital from 1982 until 2006. Her continuing administrative appointments include director of the Down syndrome Program and the Feeding Team as well as co-medical director of the Automotive Safety Program and the National Center for Safe Travel for Children with Special Needs. She has Board Certification in Pediatrics, Clinical Genetics and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.

Dr Bull represents the American Academy of Pediatrics on the NIH Down Syndrome Consortium, serves on the PCORI Advisory Panel on Rare Diseases and the Board of Directors of the Down syndrome Medical Interest Group. Dr Bull is a frequent participant in continuing medical education programs for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, the Emergency Medical Services for Children and medical centers across the country. She speaks nationally and internationally on several topics including Down syndrome and occupant protection, especially safe transportation of children with disabilities.
