The Nitrous oxide – oxygen mix CPG has been updated and reviewed by the CPG committee.
This CPG forms part of a suite of CPGs relating to sedation, other new topics are Procedural sedation and Ketamine use for procedural sedation
The Key points for the CPG are
- Nitrous oxide provides amnesia, anxiolysis and modest analgesia with minimal respiratory and cardiovascular compromise
- Nitrous is safe to commence at a concentration of 70%. There is no evidence to support gradual weaning of nitrous oxide concentration
- Administration of nitrous for more than 30 minutes is more likely to result in side effects such as vomiting
