Cervical Spine Assessment was an existing Victorian CPG that has been revised then reviewed by CPG Committee members. It will be considered for PIC endorsement on 27 August.

Key Points

1. Cervical spine injuries (CSI) are uncommon in children
2. Allowing excessive movement of an unstable CSI may lead to severe morbidity
3. Most cervical spines can be cleared clinically. A senior clinician must assist in the assessment of children with persistent symptoms or who are unable to communicate
4. Foam collars are recommended (if the child will tolerate one) until CSI can be excluded. Hard collars have no proven patient benefit and are potentially harmful
