Widow of Dr John Barnett and mother of Dr Peter Barnett

The Royal Children’s Hospital Alumni mourn the death of Margaret, a valued member and the widow of another former member, plastic surgeon, Dr John Barnett.

Margaret graduated from Melbourne University medical school in 1951 and trained in Haematology and Pathology.  In the mid 1960s she founded the first cytogenetics laboratory in Melbourne. Her appointment as an Officer in the Order of Australia, in 1993, was made in recognition of her distinguished service to medical research and to education.

We honour her national recognition as a role model for women in research, through her leadership in the establishment of cytogenetics as a new field of medical research.
