Ward grandparents drive

Monday July 5 – 774 ABC Drive program with Libbi Gorr

Judy Christy is The Royal Children’s Hospital’s last remaining Ward Grandparent. Three days a week she hops onto a tram in rain, hail or shine, to spend up to four hours a day with patients whose parents cannot be by their bedside.

Judy is a retired teacher and has a great rapport with many of the kids she looks after. If it’s an older child, she’ll play cards or board games with them. If her patient is in a wheelchair, she’ll take them to the garden or the Starlight Room. And if she is looking after a baby, that baby gets plenty of cuddles.

Four-year-old Yuli is one of the children she looks after and the two have formed a special bond.

But as much as Judy loves her job, she would also love to have more people join her. The RCH is now on a drive to recruit more people to the Ward Grandparents program.
