The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) gave the best present they could on Christmas Day – smiles on patients’ faces.
Official Christmas Day celebrations began with the arrival of the MFB’s Once-a-Year Club, which included firefighters, musicians and clowns who rolled up in a double decker bus and a variety of historical fire appliances.
Arriving at the helipad, the colourful bunch continued a 78-year-tradition of visiting each patient in the hospital.
Governor and Mrs de Kretser also visited, joining Chief Executive Officer Tony Cull on a tour of the hospital to meet patients, families and staff members.
After many stops, songs and smiles, the group finished up in the back cafeteria for some refreshments and a rousing rendition of For He’s Jolly Good Fellow – the traditional song of the day.
Particular mention goes to Santa for his hard work in captivating adults and children alike as he handed out presents and visited the families. Each patient was given a present by Santa, kindly donated throughout the year.
RCH Food and Nutrition Services staff also put on a mouth-watering and much appreciated Christmas Day lunch for patients, families and staff.
Many parents commented that the efforts of the RCH and MFB made all the difference to having to be in hospital on Christmas Day.
