Six-year-old Chelsea Aquilina has amazed doctors, learning to walk and talk again after sustaining severe head injuries when she was hit by a ute late last year.

After several surgeries and months of rehabilitation Chelsea is expected to be able to go home soon.

RCH rehabilitation unit clinical services head Dr Kevin Dunne said: “She’s had a very severe injury, one of the most severe we’ve had to deal with, and she’s making very good progress.”

While good medical care and the love and support of her family had gone some way, Chelsea’s desire to “get going” had got her through, Dr Dunne said.

Mum Susie Aquilina said: “It’s her fighting spirit, she’s always had it, she’s just got that spunk about her. Most of the time she’s happy-go-lucky … and she’s stayed positive and happy throughout it all. I’m just amazed and thankful to the medical staff … she seems to be improving every day.”
