RCH Emergency Department update – Thunderclap asthma

In the past 24 hours our Emergency Department (ED) has treated more than 300 children, many of whom presented with ‘thunderclap asthma’. At 8.30am there were more than 60 patients waiting to be seen.

The most seriously injured or sickest children are always seen first at ED so children with less urgent conditions currently face long wait times to see a doctor.

During this busy period, for less urgent care, please consider visiting your local hospital ED or GP to avoid longer than usual wait times. If required, they will refer you to the RCH.

Of course, if your child is critically ill, you should call 000 or bring them to our ED.

We think it’s important that we keep our community informed about levels of demand so you can make the best choice for your child.
