Kids wanted for 3D photography research project

AHEAD_facebook_imageThe RCH is looking for kids to participate in an exciting research project that examines the size and head shape of children and the changes that occur during childhood.

The Australian Head shapes Examination and Analysis Database (AHEAD) research project, led by Professor Tony Penington, involves collecting 3D photographs of children’s heads.

Researchers are hoping to examine around 1,900 images, with the aim of establishing what a ‘normal’ child’s head size and shape looks like throughout childhood.

The information gathered from this project will be the first of its kind in the world, and will help the RCH to improve treatment of those children with differences of appearance.

We would like to invite children who do not have a medical condition that affects their growth or bones to be involved by allowing our medical photographer to take a 3D photograph of their head. We especially want children under five years of age.

The image system uses 18 specialised cameras, takes less than a second, and is not harmful in any way. Each participant will receive a copy of the 3D photograph on a CD.

All we need is 15 minutes on the day for you to read and complete the Parent/Guardian Information Statement and Consent Form before we capture the photograph.

If you would like more information about the study or if you would like to arrange a time to have your child’s photograph taken at the RCH, please contact Robert Reitmaier, 3D Imaging Manager, on (03) 9345 7087 or Robert.Reitmaier@rch.org.au.

Hi have 2 boys, one coming up to 4 and one coming up to 2. My eldest had a very flat head as a baby and is still pretty misshapen now, but he doesn’t have a medical condition. I’d be happy for them both to be photographed

    • Courtney Watts

Hi Rebecca. Thanks so much for expressing your interest; your sons sound like they would be a great fit for the project. Please email our 3D Imaging Manager Robert.Reitmaier@rch.org.au to express your interest. Thank you.

My 11 month old chloe has had a misshapen head since birth. No amount of sleep positions or tummy time helped. I am happy for her to be used for the photos. My other daughter is 4. She does however have a medical condition that is still a mystery that she has had (we assume) since birth. Although it doesn’t seem to have affected her bones.

Thanks for expressing your interest Amelia. Please call our 3D Imaging Manger Robert on (03) 9345 7087 or email Robert.Reitmaier@rch.org.au and he will be able to chat to you further on your daughters’ suitability for this project. Thank you.
