A special bond between three RCH patients

Three patients at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) have developed a special bond after their battles with the same rare genetic condition.

Three-year-old Mia Mircevski and 11-year-old Hannah Ayres and Elizabeth Rickard all received recent bone marrow transplants to treat Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Despite having the same genetic condition the three girls all experienced varying critical symptoms. Hannah spent days in PICU at the RCH with lung failure, Elizabeth had lung disease and brain disease and Mia had a severe case of the The Epstein–Barr virus, resulting in liver and skin disease, with up to 70 per cent of her tiny body covered in superficial burns.

Mia, Hannah and Elizabeth’s treatment involved almost every department at the RCH and after long-term treatment and a bone marrow transplant, all three girls are now on the road to recovery.
