Emily Manolaros was admitted to The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) after she collapsed at school on March 1. The five-year-old was paralysed by Guillain Barre syndrome, a life-threatening disease where the immune system attacks nerves.
“She lost her speech, walking, movement – she was actually paralysed,” Ms Petrovska said. After laying motionless for four days she began to take her first steps unaided, which Ms Petrovska said was a miracle.
RCH neurologist Dr Jeremy Freeman said Guillain Barre syndrome was rare, affecting fewer than one in 100,000 Australian children each year.
