Exploring the role of rehabilitation services in the management of Functional Neurological Disorders

The approach and attitude towards Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) has changed over the last decade and anecdotally at least, we seem to be seeing more cases in our day-to-day practice.  Patients with functional symptoms present to many disciplines and functional symptoms can co-exist with organic pathology. There is now evidence to show earlier diagnosis and treatment can lead to more positive outcomes.

Lessons learned from the review of child deaths in Victoria in 2021

The independent Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity (CCOPMM) reviews cases of maternal, perinatal, and paediatric mortality and morbidity. Child deaths have been reviewed since 1985. The child and adolescent subcommittee of CCOPMM reviews deaths and develops recommendations and good practice points for practitioners and health systems.

Medicines for ADHD: They work, but are they safe?

Meta-analyses show that medication is an effective treatment pathway in children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD. These medications are also commonly associated with a number of side effects and risk factors for other conditions, which are less well understood by practitioners. This Grand Round intends to balance understanding of the efficacy of ADHD medication with the potential risks, and provide evidence for the safety of ADHD medication prescription in clinical practice.

Clinical Transfusion Practice: Small steps and giant leaps

This Grand Rounds presentation was originally given as The Ruth Sanger Oration at the Blood conference in 2022.  The Ruth Sanger Medal is awarded annually by the Australian and New Zealand Society of blood transfusion to someone who has made a significant contribution to the field of transfusion medicine. It is made in memory of the extraordinary contributions of Ruth Sanger, an Australian scientist and blood group serologist whose meticulous work led to significant increases in our knowledge of blood groups, blood-group antibodies, and the genetics of blood groups.
