 SYNOPSIS:For more than 30 years Victoria has been well served by the Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS) and the Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETS). In 2006 the Perinatal Emergency Referral Service (PERS) was formed to facilitate timely access to tertiary perinatal services for high risk pregnant women. There are obvious synergies across the three services and in 2011 NETS and PERS moved from the Royal Women’s Hospital to the new RCH as the first step in the amalgamation of the three services.

This presentation describes the roles and activities of the 3 services and provides an overview of the steps in the amalgamation process. The various challenges will be presented and discussed together with future directions and opportunities.

SPEAKER: Dr Michael Stewart is the Medical Director of PIPER Neonatal (formerly the Newborn Emergency Transport Service, NETS) and a Neonatologist at RCH and the Royal Women’s Hospital. His interests include retrieval medicine, parent counselling in pregnancies complicated by fetal anomalies and surgical/complex medical neonatology. More recently he completed a Masters in Health Services Management focusing in Quality in Healthcare and the importance of Human Factors in patient safety.
