COVID-19 Kids: What can immune system differences between children and adults tell us about susceptibility to severe COVID-19

Synopsis:

COVID-19 is almost always a mild disease in children. Adults are much more likely to become very unwell or die than children.  Why is this so?

Can immunology explain the differences in COVID-19 disease severity between children and adults?

What do we know about the immunological responses to SARS-CoV-2 and why it is so important to understand this in the context of vaccine development?

We’ve heard about serological tests and “immunity passports” but are the current serological tests any good?

To address these questions, we will hear from 3 of our scientists.

Speakers:

Dr Dan Pellicci – Group Leader, Cellular Immunology Group, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI)

Professor Phil Sutton – Group Leader, Mucosal Immunology, MCRI

Associate Professor Paul Licciardi – Team Leader, New Vaccines, MCRI
