Synopsis

Widening health inequities, emerging disease threats, and shortfalls in financing for health are challenging the gains made in global health over the past 20 years.  Many countries face a ‘triple transition’: Epidemiologically –  from infectious to chronic diseases; Financially – from donor to domestic financing of health, and Structurally – as health systems reorganise to achieve universal health coverage.  Dr Stephanie Williams will provide an overview of Australia’s global health contribution with practical examples of how the aid program is adapting to these changes.

Dr Stephanie Williams is the Principal Health Specialist at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, where she provides strategic and technical advice on health for the aid program. Stephanie is a public health physician and Visiting Fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at Australia National University. Previously Stephanie was formerly a medical adviser to Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, and with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the World Health Organization in Africa, South East Asia and the Pacific.
