Children having tests, treatments, examinations and interventions; proposing an approach to minimise anxiety, distress, restraint and harm

Synopsis:

This Grand Round will provide a critical overview of what we know about holding children for clinical procedures, considering the child, parent, health professional and system factors which can influence procedural practice. Lucy will discuss an approach to challenge accepted narratives within practice and adopt a more child-centred rights-based approach to reduce harm and the use of restrictive practice during procedures.

Speaker:

Professor Lucy Bray is a nurse who has worked in acute children’s nursing for over 25 years, specialising in children’s procedures and surgery. She is the Professor in Child Health Literacy in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine at Edge Hill University in the UK.

Her research interests include the education, information needs and preparation of children, young people and their parents for surgery, procedures, and interventions, with a particular focus on the use of clinical holding and restraint. Her work explores how children and young people can be involved in creating meaningful health information and how this health information can reach and impact on the experiences of children and young people. She leads the multi-disciplinary international ISupport collaboration who have developed the ‘rights-based standards for children having tests, treatments, examinations and interventions’.

Lucy’s research is mostly qualitative and uses innovative methods to facilitate the involvement of children and young people. She has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and has been shortlisted for national research and patient information awards.
