SYNOPSIS
Paediatric palliative care is a relatively new specialty and one that is often misunderstood. In this presentation, we will explore and dispel some of the mythology surrounding palliative care and examine the evidence relating to how it can assist children and families. We will also describe barriers to the provision of care including how we as health professionals respond to the potential or imminent death of a patient. Strategies to overcome these barriers will be outlined as we explore what palliative care at a ‘great’ children’s hospital should look like.
