{"id":932,"date":"2003-08-04T15:35:40","date_gmt":"2003-08-04T05:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/inthenews\/?p=932"},"modified":"2020-05-15T08:28:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T22:28:53","slug":"mothersafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/mothersafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Mothersafe &#8211; a new service at The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital\u00a0 has launched a new service for pregnant women called Mothersafe.<\/p>\n<p>Mothersafe is a clinical teratology service provided by the Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology Research Unit and is based on the model developed by the Motherisk Program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada and Sydney&#8217;s Royal Hospital for Women Mothersafe Service.<\/p>\n<p>As the only teratology service in Victoria, Mothersafe aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a consultative counselling service for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and women planning pregnancies who may have concerns regarding drug exposure (prescription medications, over the counter preparations and complimentary and alternative medications).<\/li>\n<li>Determine any possible risk, exposure may have during pregnancy and\/or lactation to the mother and child.<\/li>\n<li>Offer short term and long-term follow-up of infants for minor and major malformation and neuropsychological development.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a resource and education program to community health care professionals, medical, pharmacology and nursing undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates.<\/li>\n<li>Promote research activities and contribute to the collection of information on the use of drugs in pregnancy and lactation and their safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018Through the service we aim to strengthen our association with international teratogenic information services and contribute to their extensive databases on the safety or risk of drugs and chemicals in pregnancy and lactation,\u2019 said Associate Professor Noel Cranswick, Director of the Paediatric Pharmacology Research Unit at the Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Guidelines for referring patients.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physician referral<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to known or suspected teratogen<\/li>\n<li>Chronic illness<\/li>\n<li>Women requesting a clinic visit<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to new drugs<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to complimentary and alternative medicines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Mothersafe Clinic will be run from 4pm to 7pm every Tuesday.
