It’s International Nurses Day, celebrated around the world every May 12 on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Today we recognise the contributions of all of our nurses at the RCH and around the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The theme of International Nurses Day 2021 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead \u2013 A vision for future healthcare<\/em>. To mark the day, we meet RCH nurse Sarah McHugh, who delivers hospital in the home care, to chat about her role and consider the future of nursing and care.<\/p>\n

Can you briefly describe your role at the RCH?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Day Oncology Unit where I provide care to children and adolescents with a wide range of cancers and immunology disorders. I also work as a hospital in the home nurse, where I give chemotherapy to oncology patients in the comfort of their own homes.<\/p>\n

How did you get into nursing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was inspired by my aunties who were all wonderful nurses. I saw how driven, smart and caring they were so I wanted to be just like them. It really is a privilege to care for others and help them through their treatment journey.<\/p>\n

How would you explain the value of hospital in the home care?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Priceless! The patients feel safer at home and have less procedural anxiety, they don’t have to travel to and from the hospital as frequently, they don’t miss out on as much school\/play or have to wait long periods for their treatment. There is fewer disruptions to daily life and reduced financial costs, so it really is beneficial for the whole family. We see our patients over a long period of time so they really become part of the Children’s Cancer Centre family!<\/p>\n

Do you see this type of care progressing in the future?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Absolutely, it’s a wonderful initiative by the RCH that will pave the way to delivering more great care for patients and their families. Giving kids their essential treatment at home provides them and their families with the opportunity to focus on what’s really important.<\/p>\n

Do you have a message for your fellow nurses on IND?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Happiest International Nurses Day to my fellow nurses who inspire me every day! I am so lucky to have worked with such amazing nurses with the biggest hearts and the strongest minds. May your scrubs be comfy, your coffee be strong, and your hearts continue to care for and inspire those around you.<\/p>\n
