{"id":860,"date":"2005-02-14T15:52:06","date_gmt":"2005-02-14T04:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/inthenews\/?p=860"},"modified":"2015-04-29T14:17:46","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T04:17:46","slug":"book-to-assist-with-chronic-illnesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/book-to-assist-with-chronic-illnesses\/","title":{"rendered":"New book to assist students with chronic illnesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/2005\/02\/14\/book-to-assist-with-chronic-illnesses\/mapping\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-861\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-861\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/11\/Mapping.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital Education Institute has launched a new book to assist secondary students with ongoing health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mapping your Potential&#8217; has been designed as an interactive resource to help students with chronic illnesses juggle their health, social, emotional and educational needs.\u00a0 With engaging illustrations, the book encourages students to find their own methods of balancing their needs, building a vision for the future, and discussing the difficulties of dealing with an illness.<\/p>\n<p>According to the author, Kate Parker, an Education Advisor at the hospital&#8217;s Education Institute, &#8220;Students with chronic illnesses often have complex educational needs.\u00a0 With prolonged absences from school, students can quickly become disconnected from their peers and school community.\u00a0 To be used as a personal tool, similar to a diary, &#8216;Mapping your Potential&#8217; encourages students to focus on all aspects of their life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mapping your Potential&#8217; is the first book that has been written for students with chronic illnesses, it recognises that their needs are unique and specifically caters for individual differences.
