{"id":8535,"date":"2020-12-23T08:50:04","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T21:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/?p=8535"},"modified":"2020-12-23T08:50:04","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T21:50:04","slug":"rch-artists-shine-on-the-front-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/rch-artists-shine-on-the-front-page\/","title":{"rendered":"RCH artists shine on the front page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Twelve of our own budding artists are preparing for their masterpieces to be shared with the world on the 2021 covers of the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet Child &amp; Adolescent Health.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The artworks created by oncology patients through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/ccc\/\">Children\u2019s Cancer Centre<\/a> art therapy program feature a range of mediums including photography, watercolour, resin, painting and collage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8539 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/AJA_1408_Aidan-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"393\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/AJA_1408_Aidan-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/AJA_1408_Aidan-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/AJA_1408_Aidan-800x534.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/AJA_1408_Aidan.jpg 1840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Among the selected artworks, readers will be delighted by Ivy\u2019s (10) \u2018Super Ivy\u2019 self-portrait featuring a magnificent red cape, and Aidan\u2019s (5) bright painted landscape with trees and sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>The art therapy program, which has been supporting patients through their treatment since 1995, provides children and their families with coping skills to assist them with the experience of their illness and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Art Therapist, Matilda Dawson, said the children were very excited to share their artworks which have been created at all different stages of the cancer journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt therapy is a place where the child becomes the boss and we become their art assistants. It\u2019s a place where the child can be themselves, and they love the opportunity to create anything they can dream up and just be kids,\u201d Matilda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids are very excited that their artwork will be seen all over the world, and that they are now fully fledged artists as we have always told them they are!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8540 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/The-Lancet-Sophies-art-208x280.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/The-Lancet-Sophies-art-208x280.png 208w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/The-Lancet-Sophies-art-417x560.png 417w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2020\/12\/The-Lancet-Sophies-art.png 574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The program has many benefits and provides patients, their siblings and families with a space to reflect on their feelings, thoughts and experiences during hospitalisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aim to address the emotional, social, cognitive, cultural and spiritual needs of children through a person-centred approach and develop their self-expression and artist identity so they may feel a sense of mastery throughout their treatment,\u201d Matilda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to see how children grow and develop throughout their treatment. I often catch myself smiling, when you see a child in the flow of artmaking or creating something they didn\u2019t think possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>We are given a privileged opportunity to witness the lives and experiences of the children we work with.
