{"id":852,"date":"2005-07-11T15:49:01","date_gmt":"2005-07-11T05:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/inthenews\/?p=852"},"modified":"2015-04-29T14:14:58","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T04:14:58","slug":"doctors-correct-facial-deformity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/doctors-correct-facial-deformity\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors correct PNG boy&#8217;s facial deformity"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-853\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/2005\/07\/11\/doctors-correct-facial-deformity\/asiheni\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-853\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-853\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/11\/AsiHeni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/11\/AsiHeni.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/11\/AsiHeni-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Courtesy Bill McAuley, Herald Sun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Doctors at The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital in Melbourne have operated on a little boy from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to correct a severe facial deformity.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the generous support of ROMAC, a program of the Rotary Districts of Australia and New Zealand, and the skills of surgeons and staff at RCH, twenty month old Asi Heni&#8217;s beautiful, beaming smile will be the first thing his father and 5 year old brother see when he returns home.<\/p>\n<p>Asi was born with a rare cranio-facial abnormality called an encephalocele.\u00a0 This is a hernia of the brain where the brain and its surrounding fluid protrudes into the facial region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The surgery required a combined approach with experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons, anaesthetists and nurses.\u00a0 Neurosurgeon Mr Patrick Lo and plastic surgeon Mr Tony Holmes operated to reduce the herniated brain, prevent the leakage of brain fluid, and reconstruct the orbit and nose.\u00a0 Surgeons removed the front of the skull, repaired the brain deformity and rebuilt Asi&#8217;s face with bone grafts.<\/p>\n<p>When ROMAC representatives first met Asi in PNG they immediately resolved to raise funds to bring him to Australia for surgery.\u00a0 Rotary Clubs in Victoria donated funds, and McDonald&#8217;s Restaurants in Victoria raised $20,000 for the project through a statewide Drive-Thru Challenge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_854\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-854\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/2005\/07\/11\/doctors-correct-facial-deformity\/asiheni_beforeafter\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-854\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-854\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/11\/AsiHeni_BeforeAfter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pre and 2 week post op<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doctors at The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital in Melbourne have operated on a little boy from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to correct a severe facial deformity.
