{"id":4565,"date":"2014-07-17T06:49:08","date_gmt":"2014-07-16T20:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/?p=4565"},"modified":"2015-04-29T11:47:31","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T01:47:31","slug":"rch-highly-commended-at-2014-design-and-health-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/rch-highly-commended-at-2014-design-and-health-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"RCH Highly Commended at 2014 Design and Health Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4566\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/3a56fed-280x280.jpg\" alt=\"3a56fed\" width=\"201\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/3a56fed-280x280.jpg 280w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/3a56fed-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/3a56fed.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH) has been lauded at\u00a0the <a href=\"www.designandhealth.com\/Advocacy\/Awards.aspx\">2014 Design and Health International Academy Awards<\/a>, receiving a High Commendation in the \u2018Use of Art in the Patient Environment\u2019 category.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognises the full scope of creative elements integrated throughout the hospital, including art, music and play therapy, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/education\/\">Education Institute<\/a>, the Festival for Healthy Living and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/arch\/\">Arts at the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> (ARCH) program.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m absolutely delighted that awards organisations are beginning to consider the experiential benefits of arts activities, beyond just art in the physical environment,\u2019 says RCH Creative Arts Director Victoria Jones (pictured, above).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We strive to go beyond simply using art and design features to make the hospital look good\u2014we want to embed creativity into the daily hospital experience to make it <em>feel<\/em> good.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4568 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/AJA_4728_3000-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"AJA_4728_3000\" width=\"208\" height=\"142\" \/>Great effort has been invested during the past year in making the RCH environment less stressful\u2014and more stimulating\u2014for the entire community, family and staff included.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s important to look after the people who are looking after the patients,\u2019 Victoria says.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the ambitious, creative projects that comprised the award submission include (among others):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2018Portrait of a Hospital\u2019\u2014<\/strong>A week-long series of portrait workshops around the hospital in celebration of Cultural Diversity Week<\/li>\n<li>A giant<strong> World Map<\/strong>, on which patients, families and staff are encouraged to place stickers on their countries of origin, to demonstrate the diversity of the hospital community<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018Outside In\u2019<\/strong>\u2014a global film creation and sharing project, inviting young hospital patients from around the world to create short films during their hospital stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The RCH\u2019s use of art to creative engage with hospital-specific issues also impressed the Academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4567\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/MSS_2214-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"MSS_2214\" width=\"281\" height=\"190\" \/>Hand Hygiene is a good example,\u2019 Victoria says. \u2018We did a popup art studio with hand-focused artworks and the Hand Hygiene Silent Disco.
