{"id":4226,"date":"2014-05-02T03:34:32","date_gmt":"2014-05-01T17:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/?p=4226"},"modified":"2015-04-29T11:51:21","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T01:51:21","slug":"psychs-on-bikes-to-highlight-mental-health-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/psychs-on-bikes-to-highlight-mental-health-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychs on bikes to highlight mental health issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH) will be represented on an epic 5,000 km motorcycle road trip from Perth to Melbourne, via Sydney, to raise awareness of mental health issues in rural and remote Australia.<\/p>\n<p>RCH Telehealth Program Manager Susan Jury will join other mental health professionals from around Australia who are donning their leathers and hitting the road on a road trip that includes crossing the Nullarbor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4228\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/2014\/05\/02\/psychs-on-bikes-to-highlight-mental-health-issues\/susan-jury-psychs-on-bikes-pic-2014\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4228\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4228 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014-290x219.png\" alt=\"Susan Jury Psychs on Bikes - PIC 2014\" width=\"290\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014-290x219.png 290w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014-210x160.png 210w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014-400x303.png 400w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014-396x300.png 396w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2014\/05\/Susan-Jury-Psychs-on-Bikes-PIC-2014.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital Telehealth Program Manager, Susan Jury, gets on the bike to ride for mental health awareness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Susan will pick up a new BMW motorbike in Perth on Friday 2 May, before starting the ride to Sydney and then back to Melbourne and says it\u2019s a great opportunity to combine her love of riding with a good cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re riding for mental health, for others and for yourself \u2013 it\u2019s a great stress release,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>That stress release will involve 12 days in the saddle, riding an average of 500 kilometres and a minimum of 397 kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m nervous and expect to be saddle sore,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the first day we are riding 594 km, so we\u2019ll be on the go for at least six and a half hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ride, dubbed Psychs on Bikes, will raise awareness of mental health issues en route, with participants running a series of rolling conferences, including public seminars, in local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be in an informal setting with a beer and a chat afterwards. The idea is to remove the stigma that is often associated with mental illness,\u201d Susan says.<\/p>\n<p>The participants will also breakfast with local GPs and mental health professionals, with the early morning sessions focusing on managing mental health challenges in rural and regional Australia.
