{"id":330,"date":"2010-05-02T23:08:26","date_gmt":"2010-05-02T13:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/inthenews\/?p=330"},"modified":"2015-04-29T14:05:44","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T04:05:44","slug":"a-reunion-to-tug-at-the-heart-strings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/a-reunion-to-tug-at-the-heart-strings\/","title":{"rendered":"A reunion to tug at the heart strings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/play\/hecqgdvTPgI.html\" width=\"320\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/a.blip.tv\/api.swf#hecqgdvTPgI\" style=\"display:none\"><\/embed><\/p>\n<p>Young cardiac patients whose lives were saved thanks to world class technology gathered at The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital (RCH) today to share their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Eight children and their families reunited with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, nurses and allied health staff to say thank you and pay homage to the special artificial heart, known as a ventricular assist device (VAD), that gave them another chance at life.<\/p>\n<p>A VAD is used to replace the function of a failing heart while a patient waits for a heart transplant.<\/p>\n<p>The RCH is the only hospital in Australia to offer this technology to children.<\/p>\n<p>Since the VAD program was introduced in 2005, the RCH has saved the lives of 10 children with heart failure.\u00a0 These patients have come from right around the country, including rural Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p>The youngest patient, 21-month-old Sam Carter, was diagnosed with severe heart failure last year, which left his heart unable to pump enough blood to maintain his organs.\u00a0 The only option appeared to be a heart transplant.<\/p>\n<p>To keep Sam alive for the unknown amount of time it would take for a donor heart to become available, surgeons implanted a &#8216;Berlin heart&#8217; VAD.\u00a0 Sam was the smallest child in Australia to receive an artificial heart.<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, the VAD allowed Sam&#8217;s own heart to rest and recover before making a full recovery hence eliminating the need for a transplant.\u00a0 Sam is now a sprightly, healthy little boy.<\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the spectrum is 18-year-old Aaron Habgood.\u00a0 Aaron came to the RCH for surgery to repair a heart valve.\u00a0 During his recovery he suffered a cardiac arrest and surgeons placed him on a VAD as a bridge to heart transplantation.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron&#8217;s condition improved dramatically while supported by the artificial heart.\u00a0 The portable machine enabled him to go out for dinner with his family and even spend weekends at home in Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n<p>A donor heart eventually became available and Aaron received a transplant.\u00a0 Just six weeks later he was back playing cricket, surfing and fishing.\u00a0 He is now studying Year 12.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s afternoon tea not only showcased the incredible skill and teamwork of the RCH cardiac staff, but also the determination of children once fighting for their lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Young cardiac patients whose lives were saved thanks to world class technology gathered at The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital (RCH) today to share their experiences.
