{"id":25,"date":"2011-09-02T03:49:49","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T17:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/inthenews\/?p=25"},"modified":"2015-04-29T13:59:04","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T03:59:04","slug":"intraoperative-mri-machine-to-change-the-face-of-neurosurgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/intraoperative-mri-machine-to-change-the-face-of-neurosurgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Intraoperative MRI machine to change the face of neurosurgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/2011\/09\/02\/intraoperative-mri-machine-to-change-the-face-of-neurosurgery\/intraoperative_mri_255_px-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-62\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-62\" title=\"Intraoperative_MRI_255_px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/09\/Intraoperative_MRI_255_px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>RCH Director of Neurosurgery Wirginia Maixner has given the intraoperative\u00a0magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)\u00a0machine in the new Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital the thumbs up.<\/p>\n<p>Wirginia was joined by RCH CEO Professor Christine Kilpatrick and\u00a0Chief Medical Imaging Technologist Michael Kean this morning as they\u00a0enjoyed a\u00a0sneak peek of the machine before its magnet is switched on in coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Children&#8217;s Hospital (RCH) will be the first paediatric hospital in Australia to offer intraoperative MRI, changing the face of neurosurgery and cardiac procedures for Australian children.<\/p>\n<p>The intraoperative MRI machine will enable surgeons to perform MRI scans during brain surgery without the need to leave theatre or move the patient from the table, enhancing patient safety.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a neurosurgery theatre, the complete system will include an interventional <a href=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/file\/get\/Rchmelbourne-20110902_CH7_MRI790.m4v\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-567\" title=\"Video\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/files\/2011\/09\/Rchmelbourne-20110902_CH7_MRI452-7091-290x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>theatre for cardiac procedures and a diagnostic centre &#8211; the three room configuration an Australian first and a paediatric world first.<\/p>\n<p>The high-field MR scanner can be deployed into any of the three rooms, allowing rapid and efficient transitions between imaging and surgery.\u00a0 On demand, the scanner will rotate into position and slide smoothly into the required room.\u00a0 Images can be taken before, during and after procedures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This changes everything.\u00a0 It means that we can do it all in the same procedure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s much safer for the patients, it improves their chance of survival.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a huge, huge bonus,&#8221; Wirginia said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One admission, one anaesthetic for the patient, one surgery,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Medical Imaging Technologist Michael Kean says the technology is cutting edge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is like going from driving an old Commodore to driving a BMW&#8230;the advance in technology is so great,&#8221; Michael said.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated the system will directly benefit around 1,000 patients per year at the RCH.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase of the IMRIS system by the RCH Foundation is possible through the Good Friday Appeal, which shows the great support of the people of Victoria to the RCH.<\/p>\n<p>Read the Herald Sun article:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/more-news\/m-magnet-scans-will-save-kids-lives\/story-fn7x8me2-1226128435088\">$12 million magnet scans will save kids&#8217; lives<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Right: RCH Director of Neurosurgery Wirgnia Maixner is impressed with the new intraoperative MRI machine.
