{"id":10602,"date":"2025-08-14T09:05:31","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T23:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/?p=10602"},"modified":"2025-08-14T09:05:31","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T23:05:31","slug":"donatelife-week-miras-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/news\/donatelife-week-miras-story\/","title":{"rendered":"DonateLife Week &#8211; Mira&#8217;s Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">12-year-old Mira\u2019s journey with chronic kidney disease (CKD) began before she was even born. \u201cDuring pregnancy we discovered there was an abnormality with both her kidneys,\u201d Katrina recalls. \u201cWe had no history or understanding of CKD &#8211; it was scary and overwhelming to be thrust into a medical world, that was very unknown.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After 12 years of uncertainty and constant monitoring of Mira&#8217;s health, Katrina received the life-changing news she was compatible to donate one of her own kidneys to Mira, \u201cIt was always a given that as parents we wanted to donate. The day I found out I was a match, it was such a relief, not all parents have the opportunity to donate to their children&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Mira, transplant day was a mix of excitement and nerves. \u201cI was with dad and my sister. They were pretty nervous, so was I. I didn\u2019t really know what to expect, but I was definitely excited.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now, post-transplant, Mira is feeling stronger and more energetic than ever. \u201cI\u2019m happy that I can do things that I couldn\u2019t do before, like getting through a whole day of school and hanging out with my friends,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The recovery hasn\u2019t been easy, but Katrina reflects, \u201cRecovering together was equally challenging and extra special.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their journey isn\u2019t over &#8211; Mira will need ongoing monitoring, however, Katrina reminds us that \u201cWe are now on the other side. It is an understanding and acceptance of this being a treatment, not a cure.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still, their lives have changed for the better, with daily activities now \u201cvery appreciated\u201d that were once taken for granted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mira\u2019s perspective on donation is clear: \u201cIf you\u2019re thinking about it, don\u2019t hesitate. You\u2019ll help someone feel better.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While Katrina\u2019s message about organ donation speaks volumes: \u201cWe are so proud to wear the badge of organ donation &#8211; the importance of having the conversation with your family and being able to provide a gift that saves a life is overwhelmingly important.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s the most wonderful thing in the world. It\u2019s hard. You need lots of help, and time to heal. But it is wonderful.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mira and Katrina\u2019s story is a reminder that organ donation, while challenging, goes beyond saving lives &#8211;
